The Islip Federal Courthouse Project included a 860,000 sq. ft. new building, and 250,000 sq. ft. parking garage on 62 acres of property in Western Suffolk County New York. The Courthouse is a 11 story building, plus penthouse, with 22 wood paneled courtrooms and judges chambers connected by a grand hall of granite wall and floor finishes. Richard Meiers was commissioned by the US Federal Government to design the courthouse after winning a prestigious international design contest. The hallmark of the courthouse design is the intricate metal clad façade enclosing the courtrooms that are on either side of an 8-story atrium whose walkway flows into a 210 ft tall conical rotunda.
